{"id":36,"date":"2017-06-14T08:11:07","date_gmt":"2017-06-14T15:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/portalcreek.ca\/wp\/?p=36"},"modified":"2019-01-06T16:20:01","modified_gmt":"2019-01-06T23:20:01","slug":"gracefully-reboot-ubuntumintdebian-and-perhaps-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/portalcreek.ca\/wp\/gracefully-reboot-ubuntumintdebian-and-perhaps-others\/","title":{"rendered":"Gracefully Reboot Ubuntu\/Mint\/Debian (and perhaps others)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There you are, staring at a crashed Gnome session.<\/p>\n<p><code>CTRL-ALT-BKSPC<\/code><\/p>\n<p>does nothing.<\/p>\n<p><code>CTRL-ALT-F1<\/code><\/p>\n<p>won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t bring you to a terminal where you could<\/p>\n<p><code>cd to \/etc\/init.d<\/code><br \/>\nand<br \/>\n<code>restart gdm<\/code><\/p>\n<p>In short, your choices seem to be limited to holding down the power button and chancing file system corruption or nothing.<\/p>\n<p>But wait!<br \/>\nThere are two more options that you may not have known about!<\/p>\n<p>Here are two ways to first try and kill just the process on your current terminal (thus allowing you to get back into your machine and at least attempt)<\/p>\n<p><code>shutdown -h now<\/code><\/p>\n<p>and if that fails, to bring your machine down in a more graceful manner than a hard shutdown.<\/p>\n<p>First, we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll try and kill all the process on your current terminal. To do this, hold down the following keys &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><code>ALT + SysReq + k<\/code><\/p>\n<p>What the heck is a SysReq key? Look for it on your PrtSc or Print Screen key. (On laptop keyboards, the key may not be labelled with SysReq, but it will likely work anyway.)<\/p>\n<p>The k in this instance stands for Kill.<\/p>\n<p>If that doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t work for you, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time to take drastic action. You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll now enter a series of keystrokes that will tell your computer to do some housekeeping before shutting down.<\/p>\n<p><code>ALT + SysReq + r<\/code><\/p>\n<p>This stands for Raw keyboard mode.<\/p>\n<p><code>ALT + SysReq + e<\/code><\/p>\n<p>This terminates all processes<\/p>\n<p><code>ALT + SysReq + i<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Kill\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s all processes that weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t terminated nicely.<\/p>\n<p><code>ALT + SysReq + s<\/code><\/p>\n<p>This syncs the disk.<\/p>\n<p><code>ALT + SysReq + u<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Remounts all filesystems as read only.<\/p>\n<p><code>ALT + SysReq + b<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Reboots.<\/p>\n<p>That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a heck of a lot better than simply holding down the power button and hoping everything works out okay.<\/p>\n<p>How will you ever remember all those keystrokes?<br \/>\nThere is a long held mnemonic that makes it a bit easier:<\/p>\n<p>Raising Elephants Is So Utterly Boring &#8211; REISUB<br \/>\nor perhaps it is easier to remember that it spells BUSIER backwards!<\/p>\n<p>You should use this method only if other methods (mentioned above) fail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There you are, staring at a crashed Gnome session.
